The great pre-historical necropolis of Montessu, located at about 2 Km to the north-west of Villaperuccio, on the southern hillsides of Sa Pranedda (261 m), extends for over a kilometre upon a trachytic plateau crowning a wide natural amphitheatre of extraordinary beauty. The site has developed into two different areas: a large hollow, called ‘Su Crabi’, and an upstream area located in geo-morphological continuity, called ‘Su Cungiau de Pittanu’. The archaeological area is also remarkable from a naturalistic point of view, as it overlooks the great plain crossed by the stream Rio Palmas, flowing close to the modern centre of Villaperuccio. The stream once fed the pre-historical village of S’Arriorgiu and the fertile fields covering the western region, towards the sea.
The necropolis was discovered and unearthed since last century’s ’70s by Prof. Enrico Atzeni of the University of Cagliari, in close cooperation with Remo Forresu. It has been making the object of scientific studies and undoubtedly stands as one of the most interesting archaeological areas in the island, either due to its monumentality and to the significance it bears within the frame of studies on rituals and burial typologies of peoples inhabiting Sardinia before the coming of the Nuraghe.
