Itineraries

The territory of lower Sulcis, located in south-western Sardinia, is distinguished for the richness of its cultural (in particular, archaeological and historical/artistic), natural and environmental resources, which concur to make it a characteristic, special corner of Sardinia, deserving to be valorised in view of the public/social enjoyment of an inheritance to be managed by the community. This is a territory where the morphological landscape is enhanced by monumental evidence, perfectly inserted within the various sites by a sort of mimesis, making them an essential part of the landscape that hosts them.

In such an integrated approach, a few sites of special archaeological, historical and naturalistic interest have been highlighted as single stages of a structured and inter-dependent route, leading to find out a whole territory, its habitats, its folklore and culture, rather than the mere single villages and museums.

Therefore, three main typologies of itinerary have been worked out, which, in turn, may be divided into secondary routes:

  • Archaeological and historical/artistic route, indicating the main archaeological monuments (pre-historical, proto-historical, Roman and medieval) and the most valuable artistic monuments of the area;
  • Environmental/naturalistic route, identifying a few remarkable natural beauties of the territory;
  • Cultural/food-and-wine route, highlighting the most ancient characteristic rural centres of this part of Sardinia, the so-called ‘furriadroxius’ and ‘medaus’, along with some information about the special food-and-wine culture.
