The lower Sulcis

The region of lower Sulcis, making part of the broader Sulcis area, looks out on the south-western coast of the island and comprises about ten municipalities belonging to the province of Carbonia-Iglesias (Teulada, S. Anna Arresi, Masainas, Giba, Piscinas, Santadi, Villaperuccio, Tratalias, Nuxis, Perdaxius). The territory is rich in natural and environmental resources. The region comprises a coastal area, from Cape Spartivento to Porto Botte, fringed with amazing beaches and cliffs, and an inner zone, interestingly alternating mountainous or hilly lands to plains.

History has marked the territory with pre-Nuragic villages, menhirs, ‘domus de janas’, ‘ giants’ tombs’ (‘tombe di giganti’), nuraghi and Punic-Roman settlements, till the characteristic furriadroxius and medaus, rural settlements having farming and pastoral purposes, dating back from the 18th century onwards, in contrast with the depopulation of the territory occurred during the Middle Ages.
